![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Zaar has been a wonderful discovery for me. (Of course, I'll always have those shelves crammed with cookbooks.) I'm still amazed and delighted by the friendliness and the incredible knowledge of the people here. Maybe someday, every drawer in my apartment won't crammed with recipes. Little by little, I am pulling out the ones I've made and loved and posting them here. I have collected literally hundreds of recipes, clipped from the Times or magazines, copied down from friends, cajoled out of restaurant chefs. So, while I think I eat and cook just about everything, I do have friends who think I'm picky-just because the only thing I've ever had from McDonald's is a diet Coke (and maybe a frie or two). Mix fresh lemon juice, sugar, and fresh mint leaves in small bowl until sugar dissolves press on mint with back of spoon to crush lightly. Muddle, gently crushing mint to release essential oils. In my own cooking I try to use organics as much as possible I never use canned soup or cake mix and, other than a cheese steak if I'm in Philly or pizza by the slice in New York, I don't eat fast food. In each of 4 glasses, place 8 mint leaves, lemon and 1 teaspoon powdered brown sugar. And my parents loved good food, so I grew up eating things like roasted peppers, anchovies, cheeses, charcuterie, as well as burgers and the like. And I grew up in New York City, which meant that I was surrounded by all varieties of wonderful food, from great bagels and white fish to all the wonders of Chinatown and Little Italy, from German to Spanish to Mexican to Puerto Rican to Cuban, not to mention Cuban-Chinese. Once cooled, add the peppermint extract and 1-2 drops of green food coloring to finish making your homemade crme de menthe syrup. Simmer over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Then I spent a summer with a French cousin who opened up a whole new world of cooking. Dissolve sugar: In a small saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Discard the ice cubes from the cup and fill with the crushed ice. Add the tea bags and steep for five to 10 minutes. Pour the boiling water into the pitcher with the sugar and stir to dissolve the sugar. Fill a clean towel with ice and smash the crap out of it to crush the ice. Sweet tea directions: Add cup sugar to a pitcher and set aside one family-size or four individual-size tea bags. Fill a julep cup with ice cubes to chill. Pour half the mint-infused bourbon, half the lemon syrup and enough ice to reach up to the top of the blender and puree until smooth. In a large pitcher mix lemon juice-mint mixture, ginger. Pour chilled lemon juice mixture over mint leaves and refrigerate for 30 -60 minutes. Mix lemon juice, sugar and water in a small saucepan. And I cooked with my Mother, who had a set repertoire, but taught me many basics. chilled Chicago Green River Pre-Prohibition Soda. Rinse mint leaves and remove any thick stems. When I was little, I cooked with my Grandmother who had endless patience and extraordinary skill as a baker. Dissolve sugar: In a small saucepan, combine the water and sugar. ![]()
